Oxford dictionary
Marketing is a word that can fill a sole practitioner with dread. The thought of cold calling or attending network events can send shivers down the spine of many a technically gifted sole practitioner whilst others may relish the challenge.
However you feel about it, one thing is certain – you simply cannot run any business without marketing and that includes an accountancy, bookkeeping or tax advice business.
You can be exceedingly technically gifted with excellent knowledge of your subject matter but to own a successful practice requires you to have marketing skills and capabilities.
Put bluntly you need to acquire clients to have a business.
When it comes to marketing, everyone is different; there are no set rules to follow. You just need to find marketing activities that suit you as well as being things that you will actually do! There’s absolutely no point in preparing a grandiose marketing plan full of perfect marketing ideas and tasks that you wouldn’t do in a month of Sundays.
Marketing does seem to be one area where some, if not many, sole practitioners feel out of their depth. This is hardly surprising. You may have sat and passed many technical exams but it’s unlikely that during your professional training that you received any training in marketing unless you took extra curriculum courses outside of the normal study routes.
With this in mind, this course examines how to come up with a marketing plan for your practice that is within your comfort zone as well as within your marketing spend budget.
Marketing does cost; whether it be in your time or by spending money on it. You can do it on a shoestring without the need for an extensive marketing budget; you may just need to work a bit harder at it. What you do and how you achieve it is for you to decide as part of your marketing strategy and plan.
This course should take about 40 minutes of reading plus 60 minutes on the task giving verified CPD time of 100 minutes on completion.
